The Carmel-by-the-Sea post office took a walloping in April when a 74-year-old woman from Pebble Beach crashed her red Tesla head-on into the building. The accident has forced city officials to intervene and initiate repairs to keep the wealthy oceanfront town’s one-of-a-kind mail delivery system going.

The facade and lobby of the post office, which is on Fifth Avenue between San Carlos and Dolores streets, was red-tagged in the days following the April 24 incident, in which the driver lost control of the car, narrowly missed hitting a pedestrian, and bulldozed through the front of the building (she was uninjured).

But as of June 26, Carmel’s revered downtown post office has reopened — sort of — thanks to some uncharacteristic maneuvering by city staff. This came as a relief to many residents.
