In nearly identical attacks, two U.S. Postal Service workers were robbed at gunpoint less than 15 minutes and a half-mile apart late Thursday morning on the city’s Far South Side.
Most recently, at 11:26 a.m., a 68-year-old mail carrier was standing next to a vehicle in the 11700 block of South Halsted Street when a dark-colored SUV stopped and an armed assailant confronted him and demanded his property, police said.
Less than 15 minutes earlier, at 11:15 a.m., a 49-year-old woman was similarly robbed at gunpoint as she stood outside her vehicle in the 400 block of 117th Street by a gunman who confronted her and fled in a dark-colored SUV with the mail carrier’s property, police said.
Police did not give a description of the attacker but said nobody was in custody as of Thursday afternoon and that no injuries were reported.
U.S. Postal Inspection Service representative Mary Johnson did not give more details but urged anyone with tips or helpful information about the attacks to contact them at their 24-hour hotline: 877-876-2455. Investigations are under way, Johnson said.
