US Postal Police and federal authorities were notified of three armed robberies of postal mail carriers in Newark today (Thursday).
Police departments around the region were issued a “be on the lookout” for two armed black male suspects who pointed guns at the carriers and robbed them for mail.
Police searched for the assailants in the 800 block of South 16th Street, but no arrests were reported.
None of the mail carriers suffered injuries.
US Postal Police are leading the investigation.
Because the post office is a quasi-federal agency, robbing a letter carrier is a federal offense.
If convicted, the penalty is up to 25 years in federal prison, according to postal inspectors.
