Syracuse Postal Carrier wins humanitarian of the year award

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Through all types of weather conditions, local postal workers carry our mail through it all.

Most deliver packages, but one postal carrier delivered a lot more to those in need.

Matthew Ross, postal carrier for Syracuse’s Teall Post Office, will be honored on Thursday as humanitarian of the year. The award will be given to him by the National Association of Letter Carriers for his work in the community.

Last year, Ross noticed report cards from Lincoln Middle School were being sent to a hotel nearby. Due to his concern, he went to the school’s guidance counselor and asked how he could help.

With the tips he received from his letter route as Christmas gifts, he bought gifts and made paintings for three middle school students in need.

“They don’t know who I am. They don’t even know what I did,” said Ross. “It was Santa Claus.”
