Senator Reverend Warnock urged the United States Postal Service (USPS) to immediately prioritize investigations into mail crimes following over 50 instances of reported mail theft and check washing in Dunwoody in recent months
Senator Reverend Warnock has long pushed for increased accountability and transparency at USPS, including pushing for the passage of the bipartisan Postal Service Reform Act, which is working to make USPS more effective, especially for seniors, voters and workers.
Senator Reverend Warnock: “Families depend every day on the USPS for essential services, and it is unacceptable that their savings may be at risk after they drop off a check for everyday expenses at their local post office.”
Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch: “On behalf of the residents of Dunwoody, I appreciate Senator Warnock’s involvement.”
ICYMI from Fox 5: The checks are in the mail and thieves are swiping them, police say
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) demanded answers from the United States Postal Service (USPS) following dozens of instances of mail theft and check washing reported to the Dunwoody Police Department. In some cases, criminal actors stole and altered checks and then attempted to cash them for as much as $9,800. These instances are especially concerning because affected Dunwoody residents dropped off their checks at USPS drop boxes or inside USPS facilities. In his letter addressed to USPS Chief Postal Inspector Gary Barksdale and Inspector General Tammy Whitcomb Hull, the Senator also requested answers on the status of the investigations into these instances of mail theft and a briefing from USPS for the Senator and his staff.
“I am deeply disturbed that bad actors are attempting to steal thousands of dollars from hardworking Georgia families and may be doing so through security issues within USPS,” wrote Senator Reverend Warnock to USPS Chief Postal Inspector Gary Barksdale and Inspector General Tammy Hull. “Families depend every day on the USPS for essential services, and it is unacceptable that their savings may be at risk after they drop off a check for everyday expenses at their local post office.”
“On behalf of the residents of Dunwoody, I appreciate Senator Warnock’s involvement,” said Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch.“The reported problems related to postal delivery in Dunwoody are serious. I hope we can work together to restore trust and faith in the postal service.”
Senator Warnock has long pushed for USPS to more effectively handle the needs of Georgians, including bolstering the transparency and accountability of the Postal Service. That’s why Senator Warnock pushed for the passage of the bipartisan Postal Service Reform Act, which will benefit all Georgians, especially seniors, voters and workers. Additionally, Senator Warnock pushed USPS for answers following reports of mail theft and check washing in the Atlanta metro area.
