One thing DeJoy did not talk about Tuesday was the lack of mail delivery service in Research Triangle Park, a rising concern among businesses there.
DeJoy has been the recipient of a pressure campaign by RTP businesses working to get carrier delivery service – something the park has lacked since its inception. Scott Levitan, who heads the Research Triangle Foundation, said there were no meetings planned with DeJoy while he was in Cary. Levitan has previously said he’s optimistic that RTP will work out a deal with the U.S. Postal Service.
DeJoy is the founder and former CEO of New Breed Logistics, a logistics and freight firm that was based in High Point before it was acquired by XPO Logistics in 2014 for $615 million. New Breed was a United States Postal Service contractor for many years.
DeJoy, who earned a reputation as a major donor and fundraiser for the Republican Party, was appointed postmaster general in 2020. When he took over running the USPS, everyone in Washington knew about its financial problems, “yet there was no plan to deal with it,” DeJoy said Tuesday.
