MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – An attack on a postal worker just before Christmas in 2019 will cost a man more than five years of his freedom.

U.S. District Judge Kristi DuBose sentenced Christopher Daniel Andrews to five years and three months prison, followed by three years of supervision by the U.S. Probation Office.

The judge rejected Assistant Federal Defender Peter Madden’s call for a sentence of time served plus six months in a federal halfway house. In a court filing, Madden wrote that his client had a normal childhood but suffered an injury at age 17 that altered his life.

Surgery to repair a broken thumb resulted in a MRSA infection, according to the filing. Madden wrote that Andrews had a severe allergic reaction to an antibiotic, which led to a skin infection.

Andrews began acting strangely after doctors administered a steroid, Madden wrote. He also wrote that his client has struggled with paranoia, panic attacks and substance abuse.
