Mail truck fire in Randolph Twp, NJ

RANDOLPH TWP. – The Randolph Township Police Department and the Randolph Fire Department responded to a mail truck on fire on Route 10 in Randolph at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday Jan. 11.

According to the police department’s report, the incident was recorded as a motor vehicle accident and not as a suspicious incident, since the mail truck was being operated at the time it caught on fire.

“Any typical car fire that you have, if the car was in motion or was just driving, say someone was driving, parks the car and it catches on fire, this goes on a simple crash report,” said Lt. Christopher Giuliani.

At this time, the cause of the fire is not known. No one was hurt in the incident.

Upon reporting to the scene, the Randolph Township Police Department notified the United States Postal Inspection Service of the incident, but will not conduct a further investigation on their own.

“You’ve got to figure, these mail trucks, they run all day long,” Giuliani said. “They’re older. It could have been anything.”

After the fire was put out by the Randolph Township Fire Department, the United States Post Office had a vehicle come to tow the mail truck away according to Giuliani.

The Randolph Township Police Department did not have any information available as to the contents of the mail truck or any damages to mail as a result of the fire.
