CHATHAM – An unspecified amount of U.S. mail was found inside a dumpster not far from the Chatham Post Office at 802 Main St.

All of the recovered mail has been delivered to recipients, according to U.S. Postal Service officials.

A “significant” amount of mail was discovered in a dumpster behind the Chatham Laundromat by an employee, according to owner Peter Donovan. The mail was taken out of the dumpster and returned to the post office, a few hundred feet due east of the laundromat. A driver for Milley Trucking saw several large bags apparently containing mail being removed from the dumpster when he came to empty it last Friday, July 8.

How the mail got into the dumpster is uncertain at this time. Postmaster Jasmine Dings said it was an isolated incident and that all of the mail found in the dumpster is being delivered.

The incident is being investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Inspector General’s Office. Because it is an ongoing investigation, only limited details were available, according to London Mulcahy of the Office of the Inspector General Northeast Region.
