DES MOINES, Iowa —
The Postal Service mail carrier who was robbed later hit the alleged robber with his work van twice, according to Des Moines Police Department.
New documents obtained by KCCI show after Monday’s robbery near Merle Hay Road and Urbandale Avenue, police made contact with the mail carrier. The mail carrier said the robber opened his driver side door, displayed a gun, and demanded his keys, wallet and phone.
The mail carrier claimed the robber took his postal key and cell phone before running away.
Police said, moments later, the mail carrier caught up with the suspect at Merle Hay Road and Boston Avenue and hit the suspect with his work van two times at the intersection.
The mail carrier claims the suspect got up and limped away, toward 59th Street and Boston, before getting into a car and driving northbound on 59th Street.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service confirmed the robbery Monday, saying the mail carrier was not hurt.
When asked about the mail carrier allegedly hitting the robber with his van, the Postal Inspection Service declined to comment. They also would not confirm whether the postal worker is still employed or if they are facing any punishment.
