A jury will continue deliberations Tuesday in a Longmont murder trial after final testimony and closing arguments wrapped up Monday with the defendant electing not to testify.
Devan Schreiner, 27, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jason Schaefer, 33, her ex-boyfriend and the father of her child
After a little more than four days of testimony, prosecutors rested their case Monday morning.
Schreiner elected not to testify, and defense attorneys did not present any witnesses, closing the testimony portion of the trial about 11 a.m. Monday.
Boulder District Judge Patrick Butler’s instructions to the jury, in addition to first-degree murder, allow the jurors to consider the lesser-included counts of second-degree murder and manslaughter.
Defense attorney Jennifer Engelmann in her closing arguments said Schreiner is not denying shooting Schaefer just after 12:30 p.m. Oct. 13, 2021, next to his postal delivery van on Heatherhill Street in Longmont.
