Local mail carrier/hero on exhibit at Southeast Ohio History Center

A career Athens mail carrier, Rose was instrumental in protecting an entire neighborhood from potential consequential misfortune. On his rounds, Rose identified 16 different gas leaks on his route. He informed residents each time and attended City Council meetings to bring attention to the imaginable outcomes if authorities did not address the potential hazard.

Because of the efforts and concern of this mail carrier over a four-year period, adequate pressure was applied and the local gas company spent $1.2 million replacing more than three miles of dilapidated and corroded metal lines that were installed during the FDR administration. A local resident, Jane Lyons, called the gas company based on a note and suggestion left by Rose. “Basically, Charlie saved our lives,” she told the local newspaper.

In 2013, Rose was recognized as the Special Carrier Alert National Hero of the Year. He has been commended by the American Red Cross. He received also a letter of commendation from America’s First Lady, Michelle Obama, that same year.
