WASHINGTON (TND) — Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., introduced legislation Tuesday that would halt an ‘illegal’ domestic surveillance program.
The USPIS Surveillance Protection Act, which was shared exclusively with The National Desk (TND), would remove funding from the Internet Covert Operations Program (iCOP), an initiative of the United States Postal Inspection Service that gathers intelligence from U.S. citizens’ social media posts.
The USPS used its iCOP program primarily to monitor posts revealing the times and locations of planned protests and other posts it found “inflammatory.” In an example unredacted document tied to the iCOP program, the USPS monitored and analyzed posts surrounding International Day of Protests on March 20, 2021.
