US Postal Services issues statement explaining why mail was mysteriously halted

The U.S. Postal Service’s contract with UPS SurePost – the company’s economy shipping option – ended at the beginning of January, and residents are reporting that packages are being returned to sender

Residents in the mountains of Colorado have reported facing delivery issues after a contract between the U.S. Postal Service and UPS expired, resulting in many packages being returned to sender.

The U.S. Postal Service’s contract with UPS SurePost – an economy shipping option ended in January. This has confused Summit County residents who discovered that UPS would no longer deliver to PO boxes at US post offices.

The issue was further complicated by USPS’s refusal to deliver to most physical addresses, leading to a significant number of undelivered packages.

In response, the US Postal Service stated it is working on a “new strategic approach” with companies like UPS that use its Parcel Select service.

“Prior agreements failed to reflect operational and financial realities, the evolving postal network, or the enhancements to our portfolio of product offerings. As a result of our new approach, some businesses negotiated new agreements with us, and some have not,” the mail agency wrote.

The statement added: “Throughout this process we have been transparent – both publicly and privately – with business partners, customers and the shipping industry about our intent to either negotiate new agreements or to let prior disadvantageous agreements expire. Communications to affected businesses began in the Spring of 2024 with multiple, follow-on public announcements made through the end of the year.”
