Topeka and northeast Kansas are at the forefront of a national change to how mail is delivered — and not everyone is thrilled by the development.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s attempt to modernize the postal service amid a rise of private sector competition has led to the creation of a new model for mail delivery, one that is designed to court large-scale commercial mailers, consolidate operations and, possibly, save the agency money.
Topeka is one of 10 markets across the country that will see a large hub, called a sorting and delivery center, open its doors. Some cities have already seen the facilities begin operations. An exact date for when Kansas’ will open remains unclear.
The idea is to shift some operations from local post offices to a centralized facility, with an expectation that customers won’t notice much of a difference.
