BEAVER ISLAND, MI – There’s no ground delivery on Beaver Island. Everything is air mail, and you’ve got to go pick it up yourself.

When the island’s more than 500 year-round residents or the thousands of summer visitors want to send or receive mail through the U.S. Postal Service, those envelopes and parcels come and go by plane. And they aren’t exactly large planes, either.

Island Airways based out of Welke Airport on Beaver Island has what is believed to be the longest consecutive air mail contract in the United States – ever since 1945. In 1983, the company merged with its air mail predecessor called McPhillips Flying Service and has continued performing the public service for Beaver Island, a remote community in northern Lake Michigan
