PALMETTO, Ga. — For much of the last year, mail delivery performance has been rebounding since it was severely disrupted after the opening of a new centralized postal facility in Palmetto in February 2024.
It bottomed out as low as 36% in the weeks after the Atlanta Regional Processing & Distribution Center went online, but had mostly gotten back to the high 70s or 80s in the months that followed — below the yearly target of 92.5% and below previous years, but certainly closer to targets than the low-40s rate for March 2024.
The most recent data, for the week of Jan. 18, however, shows a service dip more in line with the lows of last spring than the rebounding numbers of the summer and fall. According to USPS, the winter weather in January played a big role and they expect a recovery in short order.
According to data on the USPS Service Performance dashboard, the on-time delivery rate for First Class Mail the week of January 25 was 56.5% — the lowest such rate since the week of April 8, 2024.
