The average processing time for retirement applications pending at OPM jumped by nearly half to 96 days in June even amid a shift from paper-based to online applications
The latest processing figures from OPM—required monthly by Congress—further show an increase to 120 days on average for paper-based applications. During May, digital applications were processed on average in 66 days, compared with an average of 105 days for paper applications. (OPM has not responded to a request for an explanation of the increases.)
The data report comes shortly after OPM announced that it considered July 1 as the “last day of paper,” with all but a small percentage of applications—mainly, those with certain confidentiality requirements—to be filed moving forward through the Online Retirement Application portal.
