Roth Conversions Cross $1 Billion; 2.9 Million TSP Investors Have Roth Balances

The number of TSP account holders with at least some money in Roth status crossed 2.9 million in July out of the total of 7.35 million, while the amount converted to that status from traditional status since the conversion option became available early this year now exceeds $1 billion.

While the number of account holders who have made conversions, about 40,000, represents only a small fraction of the total—and the $1 billion likewise is a tiny share of the $1.147 trillion on investment—it represents continuing interest in making such conversions following the initial surge of early adopters in the option’s first several months.
