CLARE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — The USPS office in Lake and a nearby convenience store were evacuated and employees are being medically evaluated after a possible mercury spill.
Clare County 911 received a report of the possible spill at 9 a.m. on Monday.
“The postal employees reported that they had been sorting mail in the rear of the facility, and loading into wheeled carts for distribution on the back loading area, when they discovered what appeared to be Mercury spilling from one of the packages in the cart on the ground below,” the Clare County Office of Emergency Services & Homeland Security Division said in a statement.
The potential mercury was spilled inside of the building and outside on the loading area.
Five U.S. Postal workers and two convenience store workers are being medically evaluated for contamination.
