Rep. Pat Ryan sent a letter to U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy demanding the immediate reopening of the Westbrookville Post Office, which was closed on July 29 with only a 24-hour warning and not with the advanced notice of at least 60 days required by U.S. Postal Service (USPS) regulations.
In his letter, Ryan noted the Westbrookville location was a Contract Postal Unit (CPU), which allows for a competitive contract application process. The USPS offered no explanation on why it decided to close the Westbrookville site so suddenly r if there were any applications submitted to continue the CPU’s operations.
“I’ve spoken with seniors struggling to access medications and families forced to travel to other towns to receive their packages due to the sudden closure of the Westbrookville Post Office, which already didn’t have mail delivery,” Ryan said. “I am calling on Postmaster General DeJoy to immediately reopen the post office and fully restore all services. The closure of this community institution is hurting residents of both Sullivan and Orange counties – I will keep fighting until everyone impacted once again has reliable and accessible mail services.”
