Postal workers keep mail going, critics call for postmaster general’s ouster

Although the promptness of mail service keeps sliding, postal workers are taking up the slack as best they can. They have put in lots of overtime in west-central Nebraska during the election and the holidays.

Also, job vacancies at North Platte’s post office are going unfilled. Also, the postal service is again delivering record amounts of Amazon packages to individual addresses, increasing the workload at the North Platte Distribution and Processing center, among many other places.

It’s not unusual these days for mail to be delivered to individual recipients long after dark, something that seldom happened 2-3 years ago. On the processing side, 12-hour shifts are not uncommon, adding up to 60-hour work weeks.
