Michael Ashley, a letter carrier in Rochester, NY, talked about the importance of organ donation in a recent issue of The Eagle magazine.

More than 100,000 people are on the national transplant list, according to the Health Resources and Services Administration, a federal agency.

“If just a small percentage of people are made aware of organ donation, or revisit their decision, maybe more people will be moved to action,” Ashley said.

Registration is as simple as checking a box on your driver’s license renewal. “One posthumous donor can save eight lives,” he said.

Ashley gave a kidney to a family member in 2002. He also gave a section of his liver to a stranger in an altruistic donation in 2021. He described it as “an amazing experience, and a unique opportunity to improve the quality of life for someone else.”

The Eagle is seeking to feature more employees like Ashley in future editions of “Spotlight.”
