CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — A pedestrian was struck on Saturday evening by a USPS van, according to Cranston Police.

Officials said she was crossing Cranston Street eastbound from the area of Chestnut Hill Avenue when she was struck around 5:30 p.m.

According to an eyewitness and the driver of the vehicle that hit her, a USPS delivery van, the pedestrian entered the lane of travel suddenly and not in a crosswalk.

Police said the driver stayed on scene and rendered medical aid until the arrival of responding officers.

Officials said based on a preliminary investigation, the driver was not impaired by drugs or alcohol, and the crash is believed to have happened at low speed.

The pedestrian is suspected to have been impaired by alcohol, however.

Police said the pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.
