Two Massachusetts police officers are being commended for their role in a recent arrest of a suspect in connection with an investigation into thefts from area mailboxes.

Newton Police Chief John Carmichael wrote the letter praising Officer Raymond Chieu and Lt. David Tempesta for their actions on Tuesday in support of a sting operation involving the U.S. Postal Inspector and the Office of Inspector General.

According to the letter, a Postal Inspector was watching the mailbox near the Auburndale Post Office during the early morning hours and alerted police to suspicious activity involving two men. The inspector then approached the men, who tried to run.

One of the men got into a car and got away, but the inspector was able to detain the other suspect.

Tempesta was the first to arrive and went to assist the inspector.
