Mailman helps extinguish fire during postal route before firefighters arrive

SHREWSBURY, Mass. (WBZ/CNN Newsource/WKRC) – A mailman prevented a fire and possibly saved lives after jumping into action while on his postal route.

While Pjerin Kita was driving his typical postal route one morning when suddenly he turned a corner and saw a flaming recycling bin next to a home. The flames were brushing against the house and melting the vinyl siding, producing a lot of smoke.

“I tried to be calm and do the job,” Kita said.

He recalled how he saw two sisters inside the home calling out to him, “Please help, there’s a fire.”

One of those women, Sharon Collaro, said that Kita saved their lives.
