| Washington, D.C. (March 18, 2022)—Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations, Rep. Stephen Lynch, Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security, and Committee Member Rep. Brenda Lawrence sent a letter to the Oshkosh Corporation, requesting information about its vehicle contract with the U.S. Postal Service and the company’s reported attempts to avoid using union labor to build the next generation of the Postal Service fleet.
“Given the experience and expertise of these union employees in building complex, purpose-built vehicles for the federal government, we are seeking to understand whether the decision to build a new facility in a different location was made to avoid the use of union labor,” the Members wrote.
In 2021, the Postal Service awarded Oshkosh Defense the Postal Service Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) contract—a multibillion dollar deal to build between 50,000 and 165,000 vehicles over ten years. While Oshkosh has a long history of using union labor to build complex vehicles for the federal government at its facilities in Wisconsin, the company has announced it will build a new facility to manufacture vehicles under the NGDV contract in a different location that is inaccessible to these union workers.
The Members requested documents and information from Oshkosh related to the use of union labor and its decision to move the production location.
