ALBANY NY – A U.S. Postal Service employee is facing federal charges after law enforcement caught him shoving mail down his pants at the agency’s Karner Road processing facility.

The man admitted to agents from the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General last month that he began stealing mail to help pay his bills shortly after he started working there in December 2022. The man also said he would sell gift cards he stole to others.

The court documents laying out the probable cause to charge the man do not say what prompted their suspicions but in April agents began watching the man while he worked. They watched as on at least three occasions the handler walked away from his station with mail stuffed in his clothes. Agents later found the mail sliced open in a garbage can in the facility on at least one occasion, according to court documents.
