A Chicago mail carrier wrote ‘This Christmas,’ delivering an enduring holiday anthem

CHICAGO — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, but it doesn’t quite sound a lot like Christmas until you hear the classic song, “This Christmas.”

“It’s not just a typical Christmas song,” said Cy Tymony, an author and native Chicagoan. “It’s a soulful, enriching song. It’s simple, but a lot of things that are great are simple.”

The simple origins of the song date back to the 1950s, and a young Nadine McKinnor’s trip from the South Side to State Street, where the elaborate window displays at Marshall Fields sent her imagination soaring.

“I was a Christmas nut,” McKinnor said. “I loved the stores on State Street in Chicago. …I was in another state of consciousness, wacky wacky.”
