Yes, the post office is charging $50 for mislabeled packages. But it’s not what you think

People in the U.S. are about to be charged a $50 fee if they don’t label their packages correctly.

Technically that’s true. But the new fees only apply to certain packages and not for the sweater you’re sending grandma for Christmas.

USPS has instituted new fees for certain materials it considers hazardous, including some everyday things such as perfumes, household cleaners, hairspray, spray paint and electronics with lithium batteries.

Starting July 12, USPS will begin charging a $7.50 hazmat fee for Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express. It will charge a $50 noncompliance fee for packages that are not properly declared and labeled. All hazardous materials must include warning labels and markings with the proper shipping name and identification numbers to avoid the fee.
