The agency sees upside in areas like dynamic routing as it looks to stay competitive among parcel carriers, the USPS’ Office of Inspector General said.
- The U.S. Postal Service sees strong upside in using artificial intelligence to boost network efficiency, customer service and workforce productivity amid growing use by other parcel carriers, according to an Aug. 3 report from the agency’s Office of Inspector General.
- Potential future applications at the USPS include using AI to better predict shipment arrival time at facilities, transitioning to more dynamic delivery route adjustments, and expanding the features and functionality of its Informed Delivery notification service, per the report.
- However, scaling AI across the organization won’t be straightforward, the OIG report said. “Given the size and complexity of Postal Service operations, investments in AI infrastructure need to be balanced against other critical initiatives such as network modernization, workforce management, and long‑term financial stability.”
