Postal service truck catches fire while on route in NC

A U.S. Postal Service vehicle caught fire Wednesday afternoon in the Meadowbrook area while the mail carrier was on his route.

The carrier was able to remove the mail from the vehicle, according to Philip Bogenberger, a North Carolina-based spokesman for the postal service.

The carrier did not suffer any injuries and he was able to continue to deliver all of the mail on the route, Bogenberger said.

The cause of the fire was unintentional, according to a copy of a Rocky Mount Fire Department report that the Telegram obtained Wednesday.

Crews from Ladder 10, Battalion One, Engine Five and Special Technical Operations One arrived at the scene, the report said. Fire crews were able to extinguish the flames and had the scene under control.

Because the fire was found to have occurred outside the Rocky Mount city limits, the West Edgecombe Fire Department assumed command of the call, City Fire Administrative Capt. and Public Information Officer Kim Wittig said.
