Plea change hearing for Van Wert postal carrier set for June

TOLEDO — A tentative change of plea hearing for a former Van Wert postal carrier who allegedly burned undelivered mail has been set for June 9 in the U.S. District Court for Northern Ohio in Toledo.

A hearing for Kyle Carver was originally scheduled for May 28 but was continued until June because of a scheduling conflict with Carver’s attorney, according to court records.

Carver was arrested Jan. 15 and made his initial court appearance in the U.S. District Court for Northern Ohio in Toledo later that day. He pleaded not guilty to a single felony charge of the delay or destruction of mail. The federal indictment alleges Carver “unlawfully secreted, destroyed, detained, delayed or opened” mail intended for another.

Carver allegedly set fire to undelivered mail in the backyard of his Van Wert home in the 900 block of George Street in the early morning hours of Oct. 22. In an interview with a Fort Wayne television station, the Van Wert man said he had “forgotten” to send out Friday’s mail to Central Avenue and said he noticed the pile in his truck that morning and, for fear of getting in trouble, put the 6-inch stack of envelopes in his fire pit and “lit it on fire.”
