Cedar Rapids firefighters respond to mail truck fire

CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids firefighters responded to a mail truck fire Wednesday morning.

Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said the fire was reported at 6:54 a.m. in the 1100 block of Forest Glen Court SE. When firefighters responded, the passenger area of a United States Postal Service truck was on fire.

Buelow said the fire was quickly put out. The driver was not injured and he managed to save all of the mail from damage, Buelow said.

The driver told firefighters that smoke had come from the heat vents. He stopped the truck and removed packages from the cargo area. Buelow said firefighters believe the fire was caused by an overheated headlight switch.
