When it comes to shipping this item, these precautions make scents

With the holiday season comes an increase in shipments of perfume, which is flammable and considered a hazardous material in the mailstream.

Under USPS rules, perfume may be shipped domestically via ground transportation, or by air if prior authorization has been obtained. It may not be shipped internationally or to military or diplomatic destinations.

A total of 16 ounces of perfume is permitted per package. Individual perfume containers must be securely sealed in secondary packaging, such as a sealable plastic bag, and absorbent materials must be used in packing to prevent breakage or to absorb potential leaks.

The outer package should be of sturdy construction and must display Hazmat Label 876 and U.S. Department of Transportation markings designating surface transportation only.

More information can be found in Publication 52 — Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail, on the Postal Explorer website.

Employees with questions should email the USPS retail team.
