What Do We Want from the US Postal Service?

Congress needs to act sooner rather than later. It also needs to quit trying to conjure ways to save the USPS without making any significant changes to the agency. Patches and kludges are not long-term solutions. The Post Office is going broke because demand for the agency’s main service, paper mail, has plunged around 50 percent over the past two decades, and that demand will continue to slide. Concurrently, the USPS’s costs keep rising because the number of Americans and addresses keeps growing as does the per capita cost of compensation for USPS’s heavily unionized workforce.

Congress needs to get out a whiteboard and ask the public: (1) What do we Americans in the 21st century want from the USPS; and (2) How shall we pay for it?
