Private security guards have been dispatched to Colorado’s largest mail sorting facility just days before mail ballots will start going out in what the postal workers union calls an intimidation tactic.
The U.S. Postal Service confirmed to CPR News on Friday that guards have been deployed to Denver and other “key facilities” throughout the country to augment existing career Postal Police officers.
“They are deployed to provide security and act as a deterrent to criminals or employees who may wish to compromise the mailstream or potentially harm the people inside,” said Brian Benson, a spokesman for the Postal Inspector at the Denver Division Headquarters. “To maintain operational security, we do not disclose specific locations of security force deployment.”
This comes after the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this week blocked the Trump administration from implementing new restrictions on mail ballots — an important development in Colorado where the vast majority of residents cast their ballots after receiving them in the mail.
