Nearly 1,000 armed guards have approved for deployment to at least 55 of the country’s largest mail-processing plants, which will move tens of millions of ballots. The guards work for Prosegur, a Spain-based multinational security contractor, not the Postal Service.
The Postal Inspection Service says the deployment is part of a multiyear security plan and has nothing to do with the election. Fine. But that only raises another question: What is this plan, and why does it rely on private contractors instead of the sworn federal police officers the Postal Service already employs? Postal Police Officers are federal law enforcement officers. They answer to the Postal Service, to Congress, and ultimately to the Constitution. Private guards answer to a multinational corporation.
