Postal Service, Plymouth explain why there’s a post office inside a building owned by an Islamic center

A viral video raised questions about a U.S. post office sharing a building with an Islamic center.

A U.S. post office operating out of the same building and address as an Islamic center?

At first glance, it’s the kind of arrangement that might raise a few eyebrows.

And after a video filmed at the Plymouth facility went viral, it did just that.

The unusual setup prompted questions about why a federal government agency would operate in a building owned by a religious organization, whether the arrangement raises concerns about the separation of church and state, and who controls access to the property.

In a statement to Alpha News, the U.S. Postal Service confirmed the history of the property.

“The Postal Service is aware of a recent incident involving an individual filming at the Plymouth, Minnesota Post Office,” USPS spokesperson Desai Abdul-Razzaaq said. “The Postal Service sold the building in 2011 and currently leases space at this location to provide postal services to the community.”
