On Friday, the USPS Board of Governors announced that Steiner would take over in July, pending ethics and security clearance. The decision quickly drew criticism from major postal unions, who believe it points toward corporate control of a vital public service.
Union leaders argue that Steiner’s position on the FedEx board creates a serious conflict.
“His selection isn’t just a conflict of interest — it’s an aggressive step toward handing America’s mail system over to corporate interests,” said Brian L. Renfroe, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union, said the move puts the agency’s future at risk.
“FedEx has a very different agenda than the public postal service,” he said. “To me, that’s the last type of person you put in charge.”
