USPS employee admits to stealing workers’ compensation benefits

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A United States Postal Service employee was sentenced for stealing nearly $10,000 of workers’ compensation benefits, New York State’s Inspector General Office said on Friday.

Thomas Malicki, 28, of Kenmore, pleaded guilty to stealing wage reimbursement checks that were mailed to his then-girlfriend’s mother after she died.

According to an investigation, from September 2020 to July 2021, Malicki stole, endorsed and deposited 18 workers’ compensation benefit checks.

He stole nearly $10,000 from the state’s workers’ compensation system, according to officials.

Officials said Malicki used the stolen funds to buy USPS money orders before using the funds for personal expenses.

He paid full restitution of $9,776.52 and was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge.
