The Postal Service will issue its Christmas Cookies stamps on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington, DC.
The stamps highlight holiday baking and decorating — a tradition closely tied to the season.
By the early 20th century, the activity had become widespread in the United States. The tradition of leaving cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve grew in popularity during the Great Depression, as a lesson in kindness and gratitude. Cookie swaps — where friends and family gather to exchange homemade treats — have since become another holiday staple.
The booklet of 20 stamps features four frosted sugar cookies — a Christmas tree, a stocking, a wrapped present and Santa’s face — on alternating red and blue backgrounds.

The Forever stamps will be available in booklets of 20 at Post Offices and on usps.com.
