MISSOULA, Mont. — Postal workers in Missoula are raising concerns about a plan to reduce local mail-processing equipment.
American Postal Workers Union Local 113 president Sean Harding said the U.S. Postal Service plans to remove one of four letter-sorting machines.
He said removing the machine could leave the Missoula facility more vulnerable to service disruptions.
Harding said sorting equipment would be added to the three remaining machines, increasing their workload and reducing staffing needs.
“If one goes down, now instead of before we had three, right, now we’ve only got two that run, and hopefully those two stay up. Again, they do a really good job at keeping them up, and I’m going to give credit to the maintenance department for doing a good job of that. But again, those machines are at least 40-plus years old, so they’re getting on the edge of brittle,” said Harding.
Harding said the equipment was built in the 1980s, and replacement parts can be difficult to find.
