BOISE, Idaho — Treasure Valley mail carriers are raising awareness for food insecurity in the area by dyeing their hair “postal carrier blue.”
Members of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) sat in salon chairs for the transformation on Tuesday at the Undone Salon in Boise. The goal is to raise awareness of the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, taking place on Saturday, May 9.
Ada County residents are encouraged to leave non-perishable food by their mailboxes for letter carriers to collect, which will be donated to the Idaho Food Bank and other “hunger-relief organizations.”
The food drive is part of a national initiative, according to USPS postmaster secretary MK Lott. Lott, who dyed his hair blue along with other Idaho-based letter carriers, said the dye is a good signal to open conversations about the food drive without being “invasive.”
“It’s like a red beacon – except it’s blue this time,” Lott said.
