Topeka-area postal worker sues postmaster general for racial and disability discrimination

Shawnee County resident Andrea Mitchell is suing former U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy for racial and disability discrimination. Her lawsuit was filed with the U.S. District Court District of Kansas.

Mitchell has worked as a forklift operator for the postal service since Dec. 26, 2016, according to court documents.

Mitchell is suing for more than $300,000 worth of compensation and punitive damages along with attorney fees and any other amount the court sees fit.

On Sept. 21, 2021, Mitchell claims she requested an accommodation to be moved to a clerical or customer service position. She asked for this accommodation because of her anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and blood disorder.

When the request was not addressed, she resubmitted it on July 28, 2022. As of now, she had yet to receive said accommodation.

Mitchell’s lawsuit also claims she faced racially charged comments from a supervisor but does not include the comments. After sending forward complaints, the postal service did not “take any meaningful action to prevent or cease the racial discrimination.”

DeJoy resigned in March and was replaced by David Steiner in May.
