WASHINGTON, April 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Postal Service remains a critical part of the nation’s infrastructure; Americans everywhere still need and rely upon it. But it lost $16 billion over just the last two years, with a sharply declining volume base and substantially slowed service nationwide. The prior Postmaster General and author of the failed Delivering for America Plan (DFA), Louis DeJoy, has resigned. With an accelerated search for his successor under way, the USPS Governors must pause further actions under DFA — service changes, rate increases and more — until a successor has been named and has had the chance to evaluate USPS generally and all aspects of DFA specifically. It is imperative to stop the damage.
Let’s be clear: America’s Postal Service is in a class by itself. Our country mails and ships nearly half the total throughout the world. The system has been a logistical wonder for more than two centuries. It’s about Main Street. It’s about seniors, small businesses, veterans, nonprofits, and families: tens of millions of Americans who depend on affordable, reliable mail — prescriptions, checks, ballots, packages, newspapers, greeting cards, and more. It’s also about larger businesses which still find that promotions by mail can be effective, or that for shipments to rural areas, USPS may be the only way to have their products delivered.
The Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service (C21), a broad cross-section of the $1.9 trillion mailing and shipping industry, and its suppliers, who employ nearly 8 million throughout the country, is deeply concerned about the deterioration of service, especially in rural areas. Equally alarming, the Postal Service plans another far too aggressive rate hike this summer (7.4 – 11.6%) on top of more than 35 – 45% in increases over the previous three years. The huge business community that relies on a well-functioning and stable USPS — which it is not now — calls on both Congress and the Postal Service Governors to assure that a pause happens.
To ensure the long-term financial stability and viability of the USPS, there must be a pause and reconsideration through fresh, expert eyes — before it’s too late.
