A suspect is in custody after a U.S. Postal Service employee was stabbed Thursday, July 30, afternoon inside the Carmel post office, according to Carmel Police.
According to Carmel Police, sheriff’s deputies arrived while the assault was still in progress and used a Taser to subdue the suspect, who was taken into custody without further incident.
The victim, a postal employee, was transported by private vehicle to a local hospital with injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.
Preliminary investigation indicates the suspect and victim knew each other, and police said the incident appears to be isolated with no known threat to the public.
Fair Street between Route 52 and Vink Drive was closed for about two hours while investigators processed the scene.
The investigation is being conducted by Carmel Police detectives. Police have yet to release the name of the suspect who remained in custody Thursday evening, with criminal charges pending.
The Carmel Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
