Sens. Rick Scott, Alex Padilla, and Joni Ernst Introduce Bill to Designate New Zip Codes, Improve USPS Efficiency

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Senator Rick Scott announced the introduction of bipartisan legislation to direct the United States Postal Service (USPS) to designate a single, unique zip code for 14 specific communities across Florida and the United States to streamline USPS services and improve the efficiency and accuracy of mail delivery.

Senators Joni Ernst and Alex Padilla are cosponsors on the bill and Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart is leading the companion legislation in the House of Representatives.

 

Senator Rick Scott said, “As Florida’s communities continue to grow, it makes complete sense that their federal government and services should be reflected. This bill will establish unique ZIP codes to several communities in Florida and the United States to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the USPS.”

 

Senator Joni Ernst said, “Iowans deserve timely and efficient mail service. For years, the residents of Urbandale, Iowa, have dealt with delayed and misdirected mail due to ongoing disputes over ZIP code boundaries. By requiring USPS to designate a single ZIP code for Urbandale, Iowans can rest assured that their mail is being delivered efficiently and accurately.”

Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart said, “The Town of Miami Lakes, which I have the privilege and honor of representing, has faced countless hurdles since its incorporation in 2000 due to the lack of its own ZIP code. Residents experience frequent delays and delivery issues with mail and packages, inaccurate census data negatively impacts the Town’s operating revenue–affecting funding intended for vulnerable populations like seniors– and insurance rates, especially automobile insurance, wildly fluctuate. Additionally, voters often face confusion at the polls because of unclear precinct assignments. This situation is unacceptable. Now well over two decades after its incorporation into Miami-Dade County, it is long past time for Miami Lakes to receive its own unique ZIP code. I remain steadfast in my efforts to support the people of Miami Lakes and to improve their quality of life. I also want to thank Senator Rick Scott for introducing the companion legislation in the Senate. I urge my colleagues in the House and Senate to support and pass this bill on behalf of the residents of Miami Lakes.”

  3. Castle Pines, Colo.
  4. Silver Cliff, Colo.
  5. Cooper City, Fla.
  6. Miami Lakes, Fla.
  7. Ocoee, Fla.
  8. Urbandale, Iowa
  9. Franklin, Wis.
  10. Greenfield, Wis.
  11. Village of Caledonia, Wis.
  12. Village of Mount Pleasant, Wis.
  13. Village of Somers, Wis.
  14. Mills, Wyo.
