RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., said local post office employees in South Dakota were asked to hide piles of mail ahead of a federal inspection into ongoing mail service issues.
Rounds said the Office of Inspector General told him the investigation had to be conducted without advance notice to postal leadership.
“The OIG reiterated to my team and to me that they had to do this investigation clandestinely,” Rounds said. “If Postal Service leaders caught wind of where OIG representatives were going to be on which days, they could try to manipulate the results. Turns out they were correct. As soon as it was announced that the OIG team would be heading to South Dakota, my team heard from local post office employees that they were being asked to hide piles of mail.”
Rounds’ update follows his request last December to investigate the Postal Service over deteriorating mail service throughout South Dakota. He said residents of the state depend on the U.S. Postal Service for critical communication, medicine and care.
