Ochopee postmaster finds unexpected joy working at America’s smallest post office

OCHOPEE, Fla. —Don Walters didn’t expect to work at America’s smallest post office in Ochopee, Florida, for long. Six and a half years later, it’s hard for him to imagine leaving.

“I never thought in my entire life that I’d ever work here,” Don Walters, who lives 30 miles away in Naples, said.

The Ochopee Post Office is the smallest post office in the United States. At about 60 square feet, it’s housed in a former tomato farm irrigation shelter. The original building was destroyed in a 1953 fire.
